History
The university’s journey began in 1898 when it was founded as the West Ham Technical Institute. Over the decades it evolved through various forms and was granted university status in 1992. Today it reflects its heritage as well as its forward-looking vision, particularly through its “Vision 2028” strategy which aims to combine academic achievement with opportunity and innovation.
Ranking
In recent years the University of East London has shown notable progress in teaching quality and student experience. Although its global ranking places it within the 1001-1200 band according to Times Higher Education, its national improvement is strong: in the Guardian University Guide 2026 it achieved 33rd in the UK and was described as a “meteoric ascent”.
