History
Although the university received its Royal Charter in 1966, its roots can be traced back to earlier technical and engineering institutions. These include a technical school established in 1856 in Bristol which later merged and evolved into what became the University of Bath. In 1964 the site at Claverton Down was secured, and the first university buildings were completed soon after. The Charter defined the institution’s dual mission of education and research, with special emphasis on science, technology and close association with industry and commerce. Over the decades the university has grown in reputation, infrastructure and international reach while maintaining a strong focus on applied work and student experience.
