History
The institution that became Oxford Brookes began as the Oxford School of Art in 1865, housed in a single room in Oxford’s city centre. Over the following decades it expanded, incorporating technical and science education under names such as the Oxford City Technical School, and later Oxford Polytechnic. In 1992 it achieved full university status and adopted the name Oxford Brookes University in honour of John Henry Brookes, a key figure in its development.

In the UK, the Guardian University Guide 2025 places it 38th among UK universities.
