History

The university’s origins trace back to the Birmingham College of Art founded in 1843. Over the decades it evolved through stages such as being a polytechnic and later gaining university status in 1992. In 2007 it adopted the name Birmingham City University. Since then, considerable investment has been made in campus infrastructure, including new buildings for media, design, business and technology.
