History

The institution traces its origins to 1845 when it was founded by Royal Charter as Queen’s College Belfast, one of three “Queen’s Colleges” in Ireland, created to provide non‑denominational higher education.  In 1908 it became the independent Queen’s University Belfast through legislation that reorganised Irish higher education. Over its nearly two‑century lifespan the university has grown from its historic Lanyon Building home into a modern campus with leading‑edge research institutes, global collaborations and a focus on innovation and impact.

Queen’s University Belfast has achieved notable ranking milestones. According to QS, it entered the top 14% of universities globally by being ranked approximately 202nd in 2024.In subject‑specific rankings for 2025 it boasts over 20 subjects within the top 200 globally, with four subjects in the top 100 (including Pharmacy & Pharmacology, Nursing, Performing Arts, Social Policy & Administration).
