History
The university’s roots trace back to 1785 with the foundation of the London Hospital Medical College. Over time, several institutions merged: in 1989 the Medical College of St. Bartholomew’s and The London Hospital Medical College merged to become the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. In 1992 Queen Mary and Westfield College merged with other medical schools, and in 1995 the institution began using the public name Queen Mary University of London. It joined the Russell Group (the UK’s leading research universities) in 2009. The historic evolution reflects its origin in medical and technical education, merging into a broad modern university.
