History

The university as it stands today was formed in 2002 through the merger of University of North London and London Guildhall University. However, its historical roots go further back to 1848 when the Metropolitan Evening Classes for Young Men were established in London, later evolving through various forms (City of London College, Northern Polytechnic) before becoming part of the current institution.

Ranking

London Met has made notable strides: it was ranked first in the UK for “value added” in the Guardian University Guide 2026—meaning the progress students make relative to entry findings is highest among UK universities. While its global ranking bands are modest (601-800 in THE, ~#1,268 in EduRank), the institution stands out for its commitment to social inclusion, student support, and practical learning experiences. These strengths help distinguish it despite a competitive higher-education landscape.
