History
The institution traces its origins to 1845 when it was founded by Royal Charter as Queen’s College Belfast, one of three “Queen’s Colleges” in Ireland, created to provide non‑denominational higher education. In 1908 it became the independent Queen’s University Belfast through legislation that reorganised Irish higher education. Over its nearly two‑century lifespan the university has grown from its historic Lanyon Building home into a modern campus with leading‑edge research institutes, global collaborations and a focus on innovation and impact.
