History
Manchester Metropolitan traces its roots to 1824 when a Mechanics’ Institute was established to provide technical education to artisans. Over the decades, it evolved through a variety of colleges specialising in technology, design, education and commerce. In 1992 the institution was granted full university status and adopted its current name, marking a new era as a comprehensive higher education provider. Since then it has expanded its faculties, modernised its campus and strengthened its research and teaching credentials.

In the global QS World University Rankings it is placed around 600‑650 and in the UK it is ranked around the mid‑50s to 30s depending on the ranking body. Most significantly, in the Guardian University Guide it achieved its highest ever position of #33 in the UK, reflecting improvements in teaching quality and student outcomes.
