History

The roots of the university trace back to institutions such as the Liverpool Mechanics’ School of Arts (founded 1823) and other technical colleges. In 1992 the institution gained university status and adopted the name Liverpool John Moores University, honouring Sir John Moores, the Liverpool entrepreneur and philanthropist. Since then it has grown its research capabilities, expanded its campus and strengthened its mission of access and community engagement.
