History

The institution’s roots go back to 1887 with the founding of the Wrexham School of Science & Art.

In 1975 it became the North East Wales Institute of Higher Education (NEWI).

In 2008 it was granted full university status and became Glyndŵr University (named after the Welsh hero Owain Glyndŵr).

In 2016 the name changed to Wrexham Glyndŵr University.

In 2023 it re-branded to just “Wrexham University / Prifysgol Wrecsam”, emphasising its city location while maintaining its heritage.
