History

The institution began in 1962 as a college established by the Church of England for teacher training. Over the next decades it expanded its academic offering beyond teacher training to include arts, humanities, health and social sciences. In 2005 it was granted full university status and adopted the name Canterbury Christ Church University. The university retains its Anglican heritage and continues to emphasise a community ethos and regional engagement.

Ranking

In international rankings the university sits outside the top tier of global research-intensive institutions — for example, the Times Higher Education places it in the 1201-1500 band globally. Domestically, it performs respectably in student satisfaction and vocational relevance, and is recognised for strong teaching and graduate employability in certain subject areas. Because of its specialised strengths (in teacher training, health and social care) it may be particularly suitable for students focused on professional outcomes rather than research-intensive academia.
