History

The university traces its roots back to the founding of St David’s College in Lampeter in 1822. On 18 November 2010 the modern institution was formed by merging University of Wales Lampeter and Trinity University College Carmarthen under Lampeter’s historic Royal Charter of 1828. Since then the university has grown and absorbed further partner institutions, forging wider reach both within Wales and internationally.

Ranking

The university does not rank among the global research‐intensive institutions, but excels at student experience and subject‐specific performance. In the 2024 National Student Survey (NSS) it was ranked 1st in Wales and joint 3rd in the UK for student satisfaction. According to the Guardian University Guide 2026, it achieved top UK rankings in several subjects: e.g., Music – 1st in UK, Film Production & Photography – 1st in UK, Sports Science – top 5 UK. These results demonstrate the institution’s strong delivery in disciplines such as the creative arts, media, sport and design, making it particularly appealing for students targeting those fields.
