History
The institution’s roots date back to 1869 when the Portsmouth & Gosport School of Science & the Arts was established. Over time it evolved through municipal college and polytechnic phases, before being awarded university status in 1992. The evolution reflects its historic connection to the maritime and engineering traditions of Portsmouth and commitment to applied teaching.

In recent years, the University of Portsmouth has seen notable upward movement: it was placed among the top 50 UK universities in the QS World University Rankings, rising over 200 places to reach 502 globally in 2024.
