History
The university was established in 1993 through the merger of Glasgow Polytechnic and The Queen’s College, Glasgow. Its roots trace further to institutions with origins in the late nineteenth century. From its foundation the university has grown significantly, investing in new facilities, developing strong industry partnerships and focusing on access to higher education for a broad range of students.
Ranking
GCU is recognised nationally as a leading modern university in Scotland and the UK. In the UK league tables, it has achieved strong positions among “modern” (post-1992) institutions, being ranked 40th in the UK in the Guardian University Guide 2024, and named the UK’s Modern University of the Year by the Daily Mail University Guide 2025. On the global stage, the university is in the 801-1000 band in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026 and the 1001-1200 band in the QS World University Rankings 2025.
