History

The University began as University College Hull after benefactor Thomas Ferens and the city donated land and funds. The foundation stone was laid in 1928 by the Duke of York. It received its Royal Charter and full university status in 1954, becoming one of England’s older civic universities. Over time the institution has expanded its facilities, developed focused research institutes (such as for environment, maritime history and social justice) and invested significantly in campus infrastructure.

Ranking

The University of Hull has shown strong subject-level performance and highlights. For example, its Hull York Medical School was ranked 3rd in the UK for Medicine in the Guardian University Guide 2026. Globally, its QS ranking around #516 reflects growing international visibility.
