History
Founded in 1884, Bangor began as a community-led initiative to bring higher education to the region. Over time it transformed into a full university offering a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Its long history gives it a rich tradition, while still being relatively compact compared to some large metropolitan universities—so students often feel a strong sense of belonging.
Ranking
Bangor’s global ranking has seen positive movement in recent years: for QS it achieved ~#474 in 2025, placing it in the top third of universities globally. The university has been recognised for research quality—for example, in the latest national assessments a high proportion of its work was judged world-leading or internationally excellent. The teaching quality also features high student satisfaction rates. While rankings vary across different league tables, Bangor consistently performs well in UK and international comparisons, making it a strong option for students seeking a combination of scenic campus life and credible academic standing.
